Our brand-new “Legends of MIMOBOT” series sets out to honor brave men and women, those inspired humans who, in the face of the infinite smallness of Earth and its people, think wonderful thoughts and do great deeds… those individuals who improve our fates with their fabulous daring and most excellent TV commercials. The first historical figure in this series is none other than Dr. Albert Einstein, physicist, philosopher, and tongue model.

He was smart, okay? Einstein brought us the Theory of Relativity, an understanding of the atom and of the nature of light, and a love for wild and unruly hairstyles.  But it’s not always easy for us ‘small brains’ to understand the good doctor’s work. Especially when we don’t have a lot of time to, you know, read a whole book.

That’s where MinutePhysics’ YouTube channel comes in. Just as we celebrated Albert Einstein’s 133′d birthday week by releasing our Brainstein and Emcee² MIMOBOT flash drive designs, Minute Physics posted three 1-minute videos outlining some of Einstein’s most important discoveries.  Perfectly packaged for this brave, media-hungry and short-attention span afflicted world, you can scope it below. Some of the big buzz bands at SXSW this year were acts like Santigold, Skrillex, and… Fiona Apple?  Other than Skrillex, these examples of buzz bands have been around for awhile, as in… years. Even Skrillex was not exactly an ‘unknown’ waiting to be introduced to Austin’s teeming crowds… he was nominated for 5 Grammy’s this year.

What was even more remarkable, was the way in which many of the festival’s headliners were from the old guard. Fully established artists in the twilight or middle-age of their careers.  Bruce Springsteen was the keynote speaker at SXSW Music 2012, and put on an amazing performance which we covered HERE. Alejandro Escovedo, Austin-music legend, closed the festival, like always. And Pop/R&B superstar of the ’70′s and ’80′s, Lionel Richie, gave an illuminating performance at Austin City Limit’s Moody Theatre on Wednesday night. Notable for his smooth-as-ever vocal performance and for his athletic stage presence, the 62-yr. old Mr. Richie delivered a set full of hits to the packed crowd and brought out an even elderer statesman to join him for a special duet:

Touching and musical. Quite a moment.

Getting up close to the stage, we stood enthralled as the 2 hr. + show unfolded, featuring original members of the E Street band like, Little Stevie Van Zandt, Mad Max Weinberg, Nils Lofgren, Patty Scialfa, Gary Tallent, and piano master, Roy Bittan.  We were also introduced to new members of the band, notably The Big Man’s nephew, Jake Clemons, taking over saxophone duties.

Special guests made an already staggering night of music even more AWE-some: Tom Morello joined the band on three songs, with a stand-out guitar solo on The Ghost of Tom Joad.  Reggae legend, Jimmy Cliff, took the stage to blast us with three of his hits, featuring outstanding performances on “The Harder They Come”, “Time Will Tell”, and a gorgeous “Many Rivers To Cross”.  Lead singer of the Animals, Eric Burdon, took the stage for his anthem, “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”.  Alejandro Escovedo and members of The Arcade Fire joined the stage for a rousing final encore of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land”.

While many classics like, “Badlands”, “Tenth Avenue Freeze Out” and “Thunder Road” shined, much of the evening was dedicated to newer songs and an overarching focus on protest and economic recovery. This was more than just live music. This was religion.
